For years, the hoop has ruled.
Tiny hoops. Chunky hoops. Huggies. Huge hoops. We’ve worn them all — and I’m certainly not suggesting we stop.
But there’s another earring quietly muscling its way back in.
The oversized stud.
And I’m obsessed.
Not your sensible little stud
Forget everything you associate with a traditional stud earring.
These aren’t the tiny pair you put in and forget about. They’re big, bold and deliberately oversized.
My Extra Large Studs take a really simple shape — a hand-worked concave metal disc — and blow it up.
No stones. No sparkle. No dangling bits.
Just beautifully textured metal and a lot of it.
They sit right against the ear, almost like a piece of sculpture, and somehow manage to feel both ridiculously easy to wear and a little bit rebellious.
Which is probably why they’ve become one of my bestsellers.
Big earrings without the drama
The thing I love about an oversized stud is that you get the impact of a massive earring without necessarily feeling like you’re wearing one.
There’s no long drop swinging around your neck. No elaborate design fighting with what you’re wearing.
Just one big flash of metal.
Hair scraped back, white T-shirt, enormous studs. Done.
Black dress, messy hair, enormous studs. Also done.
And with multiple piercings? Even better.
I love one unapologetically oversized piece on the lobe with tiny hoops and studs scattered around it. The contrast makes the big earring look even bigger.
And I'm very much in favour of that.
But are we silver or gold?
Ah, the eternal question.
Silver or gold?
Gold. Obviously.
Well, for me anyway.
I will almost always gravitate towards gold. I love its warmth and I particularly love it on a big piece like this, where you get this gorgeous expanse of hammered, imperfect metal catching the light.
But...
I have to admit, the silver is looking seriously good.
On an oversized stud, silver feels cooler and slightly tougher. Less polished. More architectural.
And perhaps because we've been living in a very gold world for quite a while, silver suddenly feels fresh again.
Am I switching sides? Absolutely not.
Am I tempted? Definitely.
Maybe subtle has had its moment
Jewellery doesn't always have to politely finish an outfit.
Sometimes it can be the outfit.
And I think that's what I love most about the return of big earrings. You can wear something incredibly simple and then put on one brilliantly oversized pair of studs and completely change the look.
My Extra Large Studs aren't trying to disappear.
They're supposed to be noticed.
And right now, the bigger the better.
So — gold or silver?
